Egress

Egress Software Technologies is a cybersecurity company specialising in products that defend against data loss – either via phishing attacks, misdirected emails, or data exfiltration. My work as their Senior Designer has covered a wide variety of projects and outputs, including print marketing collateral, website design and development, digital paid ads and social media, vector illustration, motion graphics, and large format print for tradeshow stands.

Webpage design and animation

Building the new Why Egress page has been one of my most challenging and rewarding projects to date. A hugely important webpage, it needed to give the equivalent of an elevator pitch in webpage form – a quick summary of the company and its products.

I led on the entire creation process, starting from multiple rounds of low and high-fidelity wireframes, through to final creation of all imagery and illustrations, including the animated header banner. It remains one of the most popular pages on the website, and can be viewed here.

Paid ads

Paid ads were a large part of Egress’ marketing campaigns, targetting both new leads and those who had interacted with us before. The ads often directed viewers to recent reports or webinars, so the designs were a balancing act between ensuring the messaging was clear with sometimes awkward dimensions, the style was consistent with that of the gated asset, as well as being eye-catching and bold.

Marketing resources

Producing marketing resources for both print and digital use was an important part of my role, as they often acted as the first-touch in a customer journey. Common documents included product datasheets, event flyers, user guides, and reports. A common challenge was finding ways to show complex product details in easy-to-understand diagrams and charts.

Reports remain one of Egress’ most popular resources and generate considerable lead generation for the Marketing team. Full designs can be viewed here, and more can be provided upon request: 2021 DLP report, Defend datasheet.

Motion graphics

Animation is an area I’ve been very keen to expand my skills in, and luckily has fit well into many of Egress’ ongoing campaigns. I’ve created gifs for both webpages (Spot the Phish game, in which I also produced the landing page animation and website design) and for social media posts.

Infographics and illustration

Infographics have always been a big love of mine, and my experience working with data in my previous role at NatCen gave me the knowledge of how to best take stats from long and wordy reports, and turn them into easy-to-understand and striking assets. The cybersecurity sector, and its language, can often be difficult to understand so Egress’ infographics aim to clearly explain topics and often provide tips on how the reader can become more cybersecurity savvy.

The infographics below can be viewed in full here: One Click Away, What is a phishing email?, and How has the work-from-home-force impacted data loss?

Microsite wireframes and illustration

The creation of the original Only Human microsite was a fun project to be involved in, and one of the highlights of my career so far. I project managed the microsite design with an external agency which was based on wireframes and site maps I’d produced in-house, as well as created the persona character illustrations.

The entirely vector based look of the microsite was a real departure from the usual style, but it perfectly complemented the humorous nature of the topic – the 6 staff stereotypes in every businesses and how they commit data breaches, intentionally or otherwise. This was a hugely successful campaign in part due to the more informal messaging and style, and webinars and reports based on the topic really appealed to customers as it was easy to empathise with the characters and their choices

Tradeshow stands

There are many different considerations when designing a stand which needs to perfectly present your brand, but will also likely be covered by anyone standing nearby! Designing 10ft tall tradeshow stands can be a challenge both creatively and technically, but nothing beats seeing the final piece set up perfectly at the event.

Social media templates

Data has shown that social media posts are one of the most popular routes that consumers take to visit the Egress website, so the designs need to be good! As well as creating bespoke banners, I also produce templates for the Canva platform that allows the Communications team to create banners without designer input, which hugely speeds up the production process. These templates needed to be flexible to allow for different text or CTA lengths, but not loose any of their impactful nature.
